How to reduce your carbon footprint and food miles

Many of our customers are privy to their environment and make conscious alternatives to reduce their carbon footprint.  Food miles are a manner of measuring how some distance the food has travelled before it reaches your house and the impact that journey has on the surroundings. This can be in terms of fuels utilized by boats, trains or planes and the pollutants it causes.  It can also include packaging and landfill.  We have to all be doing our bit to lessen our carbon footprint so right here are five simple suggestions on how you can assist by decreasing your meals miles:

Buy local produce when it is in season

Buying your fruit and veggies whilst they may be in season means which you are buying locally grown produce.  Australia and America are spoilt for choice while it comes to meals availability.  Being such massive countries we’ve several climate zones which means that domestically grown produce is available all year.  Fruit and veggies in season are cheaper, fresher, tastier and hold more nutrients than meals that has travelled from the other facet of the arena to get for your table. Fresh is best.

Ditch the plastic

Plastic bags used to contribute significantly to the landfill earlier than Australia banned them on the supermarket.  We used 10 million plastic shopping luggage consistent with day.  That’s 4 billion per 12 months and it’s predicted that fifty million of those ended up in our waterways.  You can still buy plastic luggage to your groceries and even though the variety we use has reduced greatly, preserving recyclable luggage inside the boot of your automobile is a splendid manner to maximize their use and reduce the manufacture, waste and pollution of plastic bags.

Reduce packaged foods

There are many ways you may reduce your packaging along with shopping for sandwich and snack boxes in place of wrapping them in dangle wrap or zip lock bags.  The boxes may be washed and reused for decades while plastic wrapping you may handiest use once.  This will also prevent money which is constantly a bonus.  Another way to lessen packaging is to buy in bulk or buy huge portions of food.  Rice and different grains have a tendency to have an extended shelf lifestyles so buying them in larger portions helps to reduce the packaging wished on an character or smaller serves.

Many schools have introduced Wrap Free Wednesdays to attempt to reduce the amount of packaging put in their bins every week.  Get on board and communicate with your school about doing the same.  Whole college groups get worried meaning that 2 or three generations are doing their bit to help the environment and setting an excellent example for everyone.  What better way to make contributions than have hundreds and thousands of human beings operating together!

Grow your own food

Many fruits, veggies and herbs may be grown in a small area of soil and pots.  All it takes is a bit sunshine, water and time and you can have fresh food at call.  While you are outside you may absorb a few rays and increase your Vitamin D levels too.  Healthy meals and healthful body’s!

Recycle your food scraps

What better way to offer vitamins in your veggie garden than with your very personal compost!  Keep a small container in the kitchen and throw your food scraps in it to add for your compost bin while it receives full.  You can use the compost to develop an abundant supply of fresh food that is filled with nutrients.
